![]() Give me that daddy long stroke.” What do we expect 14-year-old girls to get from this? They’re being taught that feminism requires them to look really sexy, put on a show of being domineering and powerful, then ultimately allow themselves to be used by men. For instance, while claiming that feminism requires equality of the sexes in “Flawless,” in “Blow” she says, “Bring your work home on top of me. But it's a ringing endorsement for gender equality on a massive scale - and at the very least, it got us talking. My first impression of this song was via several all-caps posts on Tumblr, declaring Flawless to be the new feminist anthem that we’ve all been waiting for. Beyonc's VMAs proclamation of feminism doesn't alleviate women's inequality, sexual assault, reproductive injustice or economic disparity, as HuffPost Entertainment's Lauren Duca pointed out. Especially track 11, Flawless, which features Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. This distinction, if it even does exist within the Beyoncé ideology, is being missed by the majority of people in the world outside of Claremont, probably because Beyoncé sends mixed messages. I think we need to talk about Beyonce’s new album. While many argue that in the finer details, Beyoncé clarifies the difference between feminism and sex, it is still a very fuzzy line. This erroneous comparison is as harmful to girls and young women as is the idea that women can’t drive, work, or go to college. Beyoncé gives her audience, especially her young audience, the false idea that feminism is equivalent to sexuality. Flawless is one of the most famous feminist songs of the past decade. And herein lies my biggest problem with Beyoncé. In her song Flawless, Beyoncé sampled Adichie’ s 2012 TED Talk about feminism. In a true non-male-dominated society, a woman should never feel that, in order to get attention, she has to show off her body. In book: The Beyonc Effect: Essays on Sexuality, Race and Feminism Edition: 1st Publisher: McFarland Books Editors: Dr. A guy who supports feminism should be in love with who a particular woman is, not how closely she reminds him of the latest Playboy magazine. Being a feminist is risking not getting male attention until you meet a guy who respects you. There is a difference between being sexual and selling oneself. I thought: I am a writer and I have been for some time and I refuse to perform in this charade that is now apparently expected of me: ‘Thanks to Beyoncé, my life will never be the same again.’ That’s why it didn’t speak about it much.It is not feminist to be desperate for male attention and then justify it by saying women desire sex, too, and that we have a right to be sexual beings. I thought: are books really that unimportant to you? Another thing I hated was that I read everywhere: now people finally know her, thanks to Beyoncé, or: she must be very grateful. Or if there is a question of Beyonce’s feminism, how does her feminist image of sexy girl power. Literally every major newspaper in the world wanted to speak with me about Beyoncé. And in Flawless, which has been taken by many as the new black feminist anthem. “I think she’s lovely and I am convinced that she has nothing but the best intentions,” she told the publication. “…But I was shocked about how many requests for an interview I received when that song was released. In an interview with Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant, she opened up about the aftermath of “***Flawless,” the song she gave Beyonce permission to use a sample of the speech on. And while the prize-winning author-Adichie’s notable works include Americanah and Half a Yellow Sun-appreciated the discussion starter, there was just a tinge of disappointment that certain people would have only stumbled across the speech, feminism and her through the pop star.
